In October 2025, after thirteen years and one generation, Toyota built the last Corolla Axio. Production at the Miyagi plant ended, and with it Japan's last compact five-number sedan disappeared.
For Bangladeshi buyers this matters more than it might sound, because of how our import rules work. Reconditioned vehicles must be under five years old from the date of manufacture. The Axio's final model year was 2025. Every year from here, the pool of legally importable Axios shrinks by one model year, and no new ones are being made to replace them.
There is also something in almost every Axio article written for the Bangladeshi market that needs correcting, including the earlier version of this one: the fuel economy figures being quoted are not achievable. We will get to that.
Quick Answer
- Toyota ended Corolla Axio production in October 2025. The E160 generation ran from May 2012 to October 2025.
- Under Bangladesh's 5-year import rule, in 2026 you can import model years 2021 to 2025. That window closes permanently in 2030.
- The hybrid's real catalogue figure is 33.0 km/L on the JC08 cycle, not the 45–55 km/L widely repeated. Expect 16–23 km/L in real Dhaka driving.
- Every Axio engine is 1,496cc or smaller, which keeps it in the lowest advance income tax band.
- 2019 and later cars are fleet-spec EX trim only — a genuinely different, more basic vehicle than the earlier G and Luxel grades.
- Carbarn currently has no Axio in stock. The closest equivalents are the Corolla Hybrid, Nissan Aura and Nissan Note.
The Discontinuation, and Why It Changes the Maths
The Corolla Axio and its Fielder wagon sibling were built specifically for the Japanese domestic market as a smaller, more affordable alternative to the global Corolla. The E160 generation launched in May 2012 on Toyota's B platform — the same underpinnings as the Vitz — and stayed in production until October 2025.
Its life had two distinct phases. From 2012 to June 2019 it was sold normally, in G, X and Luxel trims with the W×B package arriving later. From June 2019 onward, when the E210 Corolla and Corolla Touring took over the retail range, the Axio and Fielder were streamlined into a single EX trim built for fleet customers — taxi companies, driving schools, corporate fleets.
That distinction matters enormously when you are shopping, and almost nobody mentions it. A 2016 Axio G and a 2022 Axio EX are not the same car with different mileage. The EX is a fleet specification: simpler equipment, more basic interior trim, fewer convenience features. It is not worse mechanically — arguably it is built for harder use — but if you are paying a premium expecting the earlier car's kit, you will be disappointed.
And here is the constraint that decides everything else. Bangladesh permits reconditioned imports only for vehicles under five years old from the date of manufacture. In 2026, that means model year 2021 and newer. Combined with production ending in October 2025, your entire legally importable range is 2021 to 2025 — all of which are fleet-spec EX cars.
Run that forward and the picture is stark:
| Year you buy | Importable Axio model years | Notes |
|---|
| 2026 | 2021 – 2025 | All fleet-spec EX |
| 2027 | 2022 – 2025 | Pool shrinking |
| 2028 | 2023 – 2025 | Three model years left |
| 2029 | 2024 – 2025 | Two model years left |
| 2030 | 2025 only | Final year |
| 2031 onward | None | No longer importable as reconditioned |
If you specifically want an Axio as a reconditioned import, you have roughly four buying seasons left. After that the only Axios available in Bangladesh will be cars already here, sold second-hand locally.
The Fuel Economy Correction
This needs stating plainly, because the wrong number is everywhere and it sets people up for disappointment.
The Corolla Axio Hybrid uses a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FXE Atkinson-cycle engine producing 74 PS, paired with a 45 kW electric motor for a combined 100 PS. Toyota's certified figure is 33.0 km/L under the JC08 test cycle, which the company described as top of its displacement class at launch.
Thirty-three kilometres per litre is genuinely excellent. It is not 45. It is certainly not 55.
JC08 is also a laboratory cycle, run at moderate speeds with no air conditioning and no traffic. Real-world figures fall well below it. Owner reports from comparable congested markets consistently land at 16 to 23 km/L, with the higher end achievable only with gentle driving and light traffic. In Dhaka, where average traffic speed sits around 6.4 km/h and air conditioning runs most of the year, plan around the middle of that range.
| Variant | Engine | Catalogue (JC08) | Realistic Dhaka figure |
|---|
| Hybrid | 1,496cc 1NZ-FXE + 45 kW motor | 33.0 km/L | 16 – 23 km/L |
| 1.5 petrol (2015 on) | 1,496cc 2NR-FKE, 109 PS | approx. 23 km/L | 11 – 15 km/L |
| 1.3 petrol | 1,329cc 1NR-FE, 95 PS | 20.6 km/L | 10 – 14 km/L |
Even at a realistic 19 km/L against 12 km/L for the petrol version, the hybrid saves meaningful money. At Tk 145 per litre octane over 15,000 km a year, that is roughly Tk 71,000 versus Tk 112,000 — about Tk 41,000 saved annually. That is the honest case for the hybrid, and it stands on its own without inflated numbers.
The Tax Band Advantage Nobody Highlights
This is the Axio's strongest and least-discussed argument in Bangladesh.
Advance income tax on private cars is collected by BRTA at fitness renewal and banded by engine capacity. The lowest band covers vehicles up to 1,500cc, with the next band roughly double.
Every single Axio engine fits inside the lowest band:
- 1.3 petrol — 1,329cc
- 1.5 petrol — 1,496cc
- 1.5 hybrid — 1,496cc
The hybrid clears the 1,500cc threshold by four cubic centimetres. There is no Axio variant that pushes you into the higher bracket, which is not true of the Prius, the standard Corolla Hybrid, or most crossovers people cross-shop against.
Engine capacity also drives supplementary duty at import, so a smaller engine reduces your landed cost and then keeps reducing your annual bill for as long as you own the car. Check the current bands on the BRTA fee portal and run your landed cost through the Carbarn duty calculator before you commit, since these are set by the Finance Act and change annually.
What the Axio Is Genuinely Good At
Size. At 4,400 mm long and 1,695 mm wide with a 4.9 metre turning radius, it is properly compact. In Dhaka's residential lanes and undersized parking bays, that turning circle is worth more than most spec-sheet features. Wider sedans and crossovers simply do not fit some of the places an Axio does.
Mechanical simplicity. The 1NZ and 2NR engine families are among the most widely serviced units in the country. Parts are abundant, mechanics know them intimately, and diagnosis is rarely a guessing game.
Running costs. Small engine, low tax band, modest tyre and brake sizes, cheap consumables.
Rear seat space. The E160 expanded rear knee room by 40 mm over its predecessor while shortening the body. For a car this size, four adults fit better than you would expect.
And what it is not. Ground clearance is ordinary sedan height, which is a real limitation during monsoon. The fleet-spec EX cars are plainly equipped. It is not quick, not luxurious, and not interesting to drive. It is a tool, and it is a very good one.
Six Checks Before You Buy
- Confirm the exact model year and trim. A 2021–2025 car is EX fleet spec. Verify against the export certificate, not the advert.
- Check the CVT service history. Regular fluid changes, roughly every 40,000 km, are what keep these transmissions healthy. Neglected CVT fluid is the most common expensive fault on the model.
- On hybrids, ask the current fuel figure. A car returning well under its expected range is showing you a tired battery before any warning light appears. Our guide to hybrid battery life in Bangladesh covers what to look for and what replacement actually costs.
- Inspect the battery cooling vent on hybrid cars. Blocked intakes are the leading avoidable cause of premature pack degradation in our climate.
- Verify the auction grade and sheet. Grade 4 or above is a comfortable baseline. Grade R means repaired — sometimes fine, but only after you have seen exactly what was repaired.
- Confirm the odometer through JEVIC. Fleet-spec cars often carry high mileage, which is not disqualifying but must be priced in honestly.
If You Cannot Find an Axio: What Else Works
Carbarn Bangladesh currently holds 30 vehicles, model years 2022 to 2026, and there is no Axio among them at the time of writing. Given the discontinuation, availability will stay intermittent. These are the closest equivalents in current stock:
| Vehicle | Price | Odometer | Grade | Why it compares |
|---|
| 2022 Nissan Note Hybrid | BDT 993,000 | 105,000 km | 4 | 1,198cc, lowest tax band, excellent in traffic |
| 2022 Nissan Aura Hybrid | BDT 1,771,000 | 40,000 km | 4 | Upmarket Note, low mileage, same tax band |
| 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid | BDT 2,344,000 | 61,700 km | 4.5 | The Axio's larger successor, higher tax band |
The Note and Aura both sit in the same advance income tax band as the Axio and offer newer technology. The Corolla Hybrid is the natural step up in size and refinement, but its 1,798cc engine moves you into the higher band — worth checking against your budget before falling for it.
Prices correct at the time of writing and change with auction results and exchange rates.
How Carbarn Bangladesh Can Help
Every vehicle we list is sourced directly from Japanese auctions and JEVIC-inspected before shipment, with two verified reports on every car: the original auction sheet and our own Carbarn inspector report. That means the model year, trim and odometer you plan around are the genuine ones — which matters especially on fleet-spec cars, where mileage varies widely.
Browse the full stock list or go directly to the Toyota range and Corolla Axio listings. If you want us to source a specific Axio year and grade from auction, get in touch and we will watch for it.
For process and paperwork see our import rules and regulations and buying guide. Vessels depart Japan weekly, shipping to Chittagong or Mongla takes 20 to 25 days, and listed prices cover the vehicle, shipping and Japanese inspection — duty, VAT and clearance are paid separately
