The gap between warranty and reality turned out to be wide. Toyota extended coverage on 2020-and-newer hybrids to 10 years or 150,000 miles, roughly 240,000 km, which is a meaningful statement of confidence rather than a marketing gesture. Meanwhile, fleet data has repeatedly shown packs surviving well past that. Taxi Prius vehicles running continuously have been documented past 300,000 miles on original batteries.
The "five years" number, specifically, appears to be local folklore rather than anything traceable. It likely comes from a period when the hybrids entering Bangladesh were already old imports with worn packs — genuinely failing after a few years of local ownership, but only because they arrived halfway through their life.
That situation has changed, and the reason matters.
Why Bangladesh's Import Rule Works in Your Favour
Bangladesh restricts reconditioned imports to vehicles under 5 years old from the year of manufacture. Most buyers see that rule as a limitation. On the battery question, it is a protection.
It means every reconditioned hybrid you can legally import is a car whose battery pack is at most five years into a life that typically runs eight to fifteen. You are buying near the start of the curve, not the end.

Deep, repeated stress cycles. Aggressive driving and sustained high-load running generate more heat and more strain than steady use. Dhaka's average traffic speed — measured at around 6.4 km/h and reported as low as 5 km/h on some arterial routes (Copenhagen Consensus) — is actually gentle on a hybrid system, whatever it does to your patience.
How Degradation Actually Presents
This is worth understanding, because the mental image most buyers carry is wrong.
Hybrid batteries very rarely fail suddenly. They degrade gradually, and the first symptom is almost always falling fuel economy. A car that returned 22 km/L begins returning 19, then 17. The petrol engine runs more often and for longer because the battery can no longer hold or deliver as much.
Later signs include the state-of-charge gauge swinging more widely than it used to, reduced acceleration response, and eventually a hybrid system warning light. There is normally a long window between the first drop in economy and any actual failure — often a year or more — which gives you time to diagnose and plan rather than face an emergency.
So if you are buying a used hybrid, a specific and simple test applies: ask what the car is currently returning per litre, and compare it against the model's expected figure. A significant shortfall is your early warning.

- Watch your fuel figures. A steady decline in km/L is your earliest and most reliable warning.
- Do not ignore the 12V battery. A weak auxiliary battery causes symptoms that get misdiagnosed as hybrid system failure, leading to unnecessary and expensive replacements.
Is a Hybrid Right for You?
Yes, if: you drive regularly in Dhaka or another congested city, cover more than about 12,000 km a year, can park somewhere shaded, and will service the car properly. The fuel economics are decisive at those numbers.
Probably, if: you drive moderate distances and want lower running costs plus a quieter, smoother car in traffic. The savings are slower to accumulate but still real.
